In 1999, Watania changed its farming philosophy to embrace farming through “organic” means only, thereby totally eliminating use of all chemicals and artificial fertilizers, and replacing them with natural pest insect repellants and sheep manure. The decision to embrace organic farming was heavily influenced by worldwide concerns about food safety and Sheikh Suleiman’s concern that only the healthiest, safest and most trustworthy food should be available to the Saudi consumer. Watania now produces organic products of such high quality that they are sought after in markets throughout Europe and Asia.

What is organically grown produce?
This is produce which is grown without using chemicals
or artificial fertilizers, employing plant extracts to
repel pest insects and disease and using only animal
manure to fertilize the land and encourage healthy soil.
What
does “certified organic” mean? “Certified organic” food is 100% trustworthy
and safe to eat because no chemicals or artificial
fertilizers are used. The integrity of the organic
system at Watania is maintained by a schedule of regular
inspections by organic inspectors from European
certifying authorities. Watania was awarded the organic
certificate from “Ecocert” in 2001. Ecocert is
probably the strictest certifying authority in the
world.
